CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: CHALLENGES, IMPLEMENTATION MODELS, AND THE EXPERIENCE OF UKRAINIAN UNIVERSITIES

Relevance of the topic. In the context of full-scale war, rapid development of digital technologies, and demographic changes, Ukrainian universities are undergoing a period of fundamental transformation. This necessitates the development of effective approaches to managing organizational changes in higher education institutions.
Purpose of the article is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of current trends in the implementation of changes in Ukrainian higher education institutions, and to substantiate conceptual approaches to building an effective change management system amid transformational processes.
Research methods. The study employed analysis of legal acts, statistical data, analytical reports, and scientific publications; comparative analysis of change management models; SWOT analysis of the higher education system; and systematization of wartime challenges and their impact on educational activities.
Results. Eleven key challenges facing Ukraine’s higher education system due to military aggression were identified, including security threats, infrastructure destruction (45 universities completely destroyed), mass displacement of educational participants, reduced funding, and the urgent need for digitalization. Demographic challenges were also examined (a 22.2% decrease in the 17–24 age group compared to 2010), along with educational migration trends (about 356,000 Ukrainian students studying abroad). Three main change management models were considered: Kurt Lewin’s three-stage model, Ichak Adizes’ organizational life cycle model, and John Kotter’s eight-step change model.
Practical value of the study. The research findings can be utilized by higher education leadership to develop adaptation strategies for wartime conditions, implement digital technologies, and optimize management processes. The proposed approaches will contribute to increasing flexibility, innovation potential, and the global competitiveness of Ukrainian universities.
Conclusions. Successful change management in Ukrainian higher education institutions requires a combination of flexible management mechanisms, project management, digital transformation, and international cooperation. The foundation of effective transformations lies in the systematic study of internal and external factors, active stakeholder engagement, and the formation of a culture of continuous improvement.
